How to Update Firmware on a GoPro (Step-by-Step Guide)

🔄 Option 1: Automatic Firmware Update (via GoPro Quik App)

This is the easiest and recommended method for most users.

âś… What You Need:

  • Your GoPro fully charged or connected to a charger
  • A smartphone or tablet with the GoPro Quik app installed
  • A stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection

📱 Steps:

  1. Power on your GoPro.
    Make sure your battery is charged above 50% or plug it in.
  2. Enable wireless connections on your GoPro.
    Go to Preferences > Connections > Wireless Connections: On
  3. Open the GoPro Quik app on your phone.
  4. Pair your GoPro with the app.
    If it’s your first time, follow the on-screen prompts to connect your GoPro.
  5. Wait for the app to check for updates.
    The app will automatically detect if a firmware update is available.
  6. Tap “Update” when prompted.
    Follow the instructions in the app. The update will download and install via Bluetooth/Wi-Fi.
  7. Let the update complete.
    Your GoPro may reboot a few times. Don’t power it off or remove the battery during the update.

🖥️ Option 2: Manual Firmware Update (Using a Computer & microSD Card)

Use this method if you can’t update via the app or are having connection issues.

  • A computer (Windows or Mac)
  • A microSD card and a card reader or SD slot
  • Fully charged GoPro
  • Firmware file (downloaded beforehand from GoPro’s website)

  1. Insert the microSD card into your computer.
  2. Format the microSD card (optional but recommended).
    Backup your data first, then format as FAT32 (Windows) or exFAT (Mac).
  3. Download the correct firmware for your GoPro model.
    Save the update folder (usually named “UPDATE”) to the root directory of your SD card.
  4. Safely eject the SD card from your computer.
  5. Insert the card into your GoPro and power it on.
  6. Firmware update will begin automatically.
    You’ll see a message or animation indicating the update process.
  7. Wait for the update to complete.
    Do not interrupt the process. The camera may beep, turn off, and back on.
  8. Once done, check the version in Preferences > About > Camera Info.

📌 Notes:

  • Always use a fully charged battery or connect to power during updates.
  • Never remove the SD card or turn off the camera while updating.
  • If the update fails, retry using the manual method.
